I've been experimenting with some self-hosted 360 VR still photos. Really they should be called sphere photos though. Above is a sampling of photos to try. If you're on a PC, you should be able to pan around with a mouse or stylus. If you're on a fairly new iOS or Android phone, you should be able to tilt the phone and point it in different directions to see different parts of the image.
